Assignment 1 Post 2
After completing in-class work and revising my paper, my position is still relatively similar. I plan to focus on mainly the values of Dr. Patch as he is the main character. However, I will still be using examples from the three other characters I mentioned, Mitch, Carin, and Walcott, to contrast with the values of Patch as well as the effect that he has on those around him. One development I have had though was my opinion of the values presented in Patch Adams. While I agree that empathy and compassion are important when treating patients, I believe that the movie takes these values a little too far. I feel that the rules exist for a reason, so the fact that Patch does not face any repercussions for practicing feels a little unrealistic and also unsafe for patients. I plan to write a paragraph expressing this opinion as well as refuting a counterpoint that agrees whole-heartedly with the values expressed in Patch Adams.
Arguing from both sides: refuting and stating opinion, will help craft a strong argument. This is an interesting representation of male doctors and masculinity in American media in general that I was not expecting. Writing about this topic I think will give readers broader perspective of the portrayal of doctors in media. - Mia Snape
