Assignment 2 Post 1

My topic for this writing project is determining to what extent vaccine mandates should be allowed.

Obviously, in this topic there are the black and white perspectives of "everyone should be vaccinated" and "vaccines are not for everyone and should not be required. People posses multiple reasons for supporting both of these perspectives. My articles shared a variety of arguments in favor of both of these two arguments as well as insights into why people support them.

In my first article, the author clearly supported vaccines, specifically against covid. However, the author also argued that the continuation of vaccine mandates was unnecessary given the evolving situation. For example, vaccines were nearly ineffective at stopping the spread of the omicron variant, so the other believed that mandating them was unnecessary. In my next article, the authors describe their study on people who oppose vaccines. Using members of a 50 year long study, they were able to correlate vaccine resistance with childhood trauma. The authors believe that mistrust in medical institutions, and consequently vaccines, stems from negative experiences with authority figures during childhood. My final article described the pros and cons of employer vaccine mandates. Pros included the fact that mandates are time-tested methods to reduce spread of disease and most employees agree to them. Cons included the fact that mandates lead to discrimination, there are other, better alternatives, and that they can harm marginalized communities. 1. As this project is about paternalism and public health, perhaps work in how paternalism is involved in your issue. Also, would it be possible to take a very specific approach to argue for and or against vaccine mandates as it is a multi-faceted issue? For example, one argument for not requiring vaccines another would be that people have varying health conditions that might hinder them from getting vaccinated whereas a different argument would be that correlate to childhood trauma.

  2. I think it is really interesting how you include the effectiveness of vaccine mandate and also include how it was ineffective at stopping this omicron. This will help in your argument as it builds complexity into the topic as a whole and gets away from the black and white argument narrative that you say in the beginning
